VIA FERRATA SAFARI
Sassolungo Via Ferrata Safari
Guided Hut to Hut Traverse in the Dolomites
PASSO SELLA
UP TO 3+ DAYS
END OF JUNE - END OF SEPTEMBER
A guided via ferrata hut to hut traverse crossing the Sassolungo Dolomites group with a 3 day long loop from Passo Sella, with your private Mountain Guide! This multi day journey moves between Val di Fassa and Val Gardena climbing 3 via ferratas in 3 days, with a beginner - intermediate level of difficulty!
If you have good hiking experience and good physical fitness, and are ready to challenge yourselve with three consecutive days of via ferrata in the spectacular Sassolungo Group, between Val Gardena and Val di Fassa, this three-day Via Ferrata Safari is made for you!
Previous experience with via ferrata or climbing is certainly always helpful… but it is not essential. What matters most is being comfortable with long mountain days, exposed terrain and physical effort.
Starting from Passo Sella, we will explore the Sassolungo Group by climbing three of its classic via ferratas: Forcella Sassolungo, Schuster and Col Rodella. Together, they offer a varied introduction to via ferrata in the Dolomites, combining exposed climbing, mountain trails and spectacular views across the Sassolungo Group.
The itinerary can be completed in two days by very well trained and experienced hikers, but taking three days allows us to enjoy the journey at a more relaxed pace, taking time to appreciate the changing landscapes and the unique atmosphere of the mountain huts.
We will spend two nights in the heart of the Sassolungo Group, at Rifugio Vicenza and Rifugio Sassopiatto, where the mountain experience continues after the day's climbing: good food, simple mountain hospitality and evenings surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the Dolomites.
As with every DolomiteSafari, this is an example itinerary rather than a fixed tour. The exact programme can be adapted to your experience, interests, the weather, mountain conditions and, importantly, hut availability.

Who is this via ferrata trip for?

DAY BY DAY
-
Your Sassolungo Via Ferrata Safari begins as soon as you arrive.
If you are travelling by train, Bolzano is a natural arrival point, with excellent connections from the main cities in northern Italy and beyond. From here, you have several options for your first night, depending on the kind of experience you are looking for.
You can stay in Bolzano, enjoying its beautiful historic centre, restaurants and lively atmosphere, with the mountains already rising above the city.
Or, if you prefer a quieter setting, you can stay in Eppan (Appiano), on the South Tyrolean Wine Road just outside Bolzano. Surrounded by vineyards, castles and countryside, it is a lovely place to spend your first evening before heading into the mountains.
For those who would rather start the Safari already in the mountains, it is also possible to spend the first night in the Passo Sella area, staying in a hotel or mountain lodge. This gives us the chance to wake up surrounded by the Sassolungo Group and begin our first day directly from the mountains.
There is no single right starting point. We will recommend the best option for you according to your travel plans, interests, accommodation availability and the kind of experience you want from your Dolomites via ferrata adventure.
Accommodation: Bolzano, Eppan or Passo Sella area

After breakfast, if we are not already staying in the Passo Sella area, we transfer to Passo Sella, the spectacular mountain pass connecting Val Gardena and Val di Fassa. From here, we set off on foot beneath the imposing walls of the Sassolungo Group, heading towards the starting point of our first via ferrata.
The Forcella Sassolungo Via Ferrata takes around two hours and is a fun and varied introduction to our Safari. Rather than simply following a steep line upwards, the route lets us experience several different styles of climbing, with aerial traverses, a Tibetan bridge, more physical sections and exposed rocky passages.
And there is even a small bench directly on the via ferrata, the perfect place for a short break while suspended above the mountains!
Once we reach Rifugio Demetz, we can finally take off our helmets and harnesses and enjoy a well deserved lunch with an incredible mountain panorama.
After lunch, our journey continues with a spectacular traverse towards Rifugio Vicenza, descending gradually beneath the enormous walls of the Sassolungo. The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and dramatic as we enter the heart of the massif.
Tonight we sleep at Rifugio Vicenza, surrounded by the unique atmosphere of the Sassolungo Group. Expect rustic mountain rooms, simple refuge hospitality and, above all, a spectacular panorama right outside the door!
Accommodation: Rifugio Vicenza

Today we climb the Via Ferrata Schuster, a beautiful and varied route that goes steep and deep into the mountain, always on very solid rock, with some more challenging sections and incredible views all around.
Once on the summit of Sassopiatto, we enjoy a sandwich with a 360 view on the Dolomites and we begin our hiking descent along the easier and but still pretty steep back side of the mountain.
Our home for tonight is the Rifugio Sassopiatto, enjoying an incredible view over the Sciliar!
Accommodation: Rifugio of the Dolomites

After a generous mountain breakfast at Rifugio Sassopiatto, we set off for another full day in the heart of the Sassolungo Group.
Today we explore the massif from the Val Gardena side, following a spectacular mountain trail for around four hours as we complete another section of the Sassolungo circuit. It is a beautiful change of pace after yesterday's climbing, with plenty of time to enjoy the landscape, take photographs and, of course, stop for a few cappuccino breaks along the way.
Once we reach Rifugio Des Alpes, we can enjoy a short lunch and put on our via ferrata gear again to tackle the Col Rodella Via Ferrata. It is a relatively short route, but a surprisingly intense one, with excellent quality rock, exposed climbing and a few sections where good technique and confidence on the rock make all the difference!
There are also some enjoyable smearing sections, where instead of relying on obvious holds, we use the friction of our climbing shoes against the rock to move upwards.
A short but memorable climb to finish another beautiful day in the Sassolungo Group!
