VIA FERRATA SAFARI
Sella & Sassolungo Via Ferrata Hut to Hut Traverse – Dolomites
PASSO SELLA & PASSO PORDOI
UP TO 5+ DAYS
END OF JUNE - OCTOBER
A guided via ferrata hut to hut traverse around the Sella Group and Sassolungo with a private Mountain Guide, part of the Grand Via Ferrata Safari of the Dolomites by Dolomitesafari. This multi day journey moves between Val di Fassa and Val Gardena across iconic limestone towers, panoramic ridges and legendary routes leading to the summit of Piz Boè at 3,152 m in the heart of the Dolomites.
Step into the beating heart of the Dolomites with our Sassolungo and Sella Via Ferrata Safari between Val di Fassa and Val Gardena. Leaving behind the fairy tale vertical peaks of the Rosengarten, we venture into the world of the massive Sassolungo and the 3,000 meter peaks of the Sella Group, reaching the legendary Piz Boè at 3,152 m.
This safari is perfect to combine with the Rosengarten Via Ferrata Safari, creating a 10 day Grand Dolomites Via Ferrata adventure that begins with beginner and intermediate routes and builds progressively towards more challenging ferratas. It also works beautifully for those who want to continue with more demanding programs such as the Civetta or Pale di San Martino Via Ferrata Safaris.
The tour includes a mix of technical difficulty levels. Some climbs are beginner to intermediate and perfect for warming up, while the Meisules and Piazzetta Via Ferratas are more sustained and classified as difficult. All sections are fully guided and achievable for those in excellent physical condition with previous via ferrata or some climbing experience. For guests who prefer to stay within a beginner or intermediate level, we recommend ending the program at Passo Sella at the end of Day 2, or adding two more days to climb the nice Piccolo Cir via ferrata at Passo Gardena, and finishing the program with the beautiful and famous Ferrata Tridentina at Pisciadù!
Do you want to continue your Grand Dolomites Via Ferrata Tour with the two most challenging programs? From Passo Fedaia it is possible to transfer towards the Civetta Via Ferratas or explore the stunning Pale di San Martino routes to extend the adventure deeper into the Dolomites!

DAY BY DAY
-
Depending on the time of your arrival, a visit to the Oetzi Archaeological Museum or a simple leisure walk in the lively streets and squares of the medieval town of Bolzano will be possible.
You will have a welcome briefing before dinner with your guide, who will give you your via ferrata gear, double check the equipment… and recommend a typical restaurant for dinner!
Accommodation: Hotel in Bolzano
-
Today you will take a private transfer with your guide to Passo Sella, where you will ride the characteristic Sassolungo Forcella cable car to reach the top, near Rifugio Demetz. From here, you will follow a descending trail into the heart of the Sassolungo to Rifugio Vicenza, where the ascent begins for the Schuster Via Ferrata, a route that goes steep and deep into the mountain with incredible views!
Once we reach the summit, we descend the definitely less vertical back side of Sassopiatto to descend to the Rifugio where we will spend the night, enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding Catinaccio and Sciliar Dolomites!
Accommodation: Rifugio of the Dolomites
-
Today, after breakfast, we will hike across the south-east side of the Sassolungo to reach Col Rodella and climb a short but incredibly scenic via ferrata on very solid rock, with some challenging sections. After completing the ferrata, there is time for a second fun route, Forcella Saslonch, which brings us back to Rifugio Demetz for a slice of cake before descending to our hut for the night. Is that enough adventure for today?
Accommodation: Rifugio of the Dolomites
-
Starting from our hut at Passo Sella, we have a full and exciting day ahead. After a 45-minute approach, we begin the Meisules Via Ferrata, a challenging route that rewards us with 360-degree views over all the Dolomites of Val di Fassa and Val Gardena. The trail leads into the very heart of the Sella group, reaching the summits of Piz Selva and Piz Miara, before crossing beneath the top of Sass Pordoi and arriving at Forcella Pordoi, from where we descend to the homonymous pass. Waiting for us there is the historic hotel founded by the legendary mountaineer, the “Devil of the Dolomites,” Tita Piaz!
Accommodation: Hotel at Pass Pordoi
-
From the hotel at Passo Pordoi, today we take on one of the most technically challenging via ferratas in the Dolomites, the famous Piazzetta. The beauty of this route lies in its vertical sections, climbing on golden and orange sunlit rock walls, and reaching one of the highest and most central peaks of the Dolomites: Piz Boè, offering views that stretch endlessly into the distance. The descent retraces part of yesterday’s route to reach Pass Pordoi, followed by a short 40-minute climb to our hut, with breathtaking views of the Marmolada and its glacier.
Accommodation: Rifugio of the Dolomites
-
From the hut, we start a trail with ups and downs leading to the Trincee Via Ferrata, following the historic ridge of the Austro-Italian front from World War I. Along the way, you’ll climb on the striking black conglomerate rock, discover old trenches and soldiers’ chambers, and even encounter a wartime cannon. You’ll have the chance to explore tunnels carved directly into the mountain itself, feeling the history come alive. The descent brings us to Passo Fedaia, marking the unforgettable finale of our Dolomites via ferrata adventure in the Sella and Sassolungo groups!
Accommodation: hotel in Bolzano
