Ötzi Ski Traverse – The Ötztal Haute Route

BETWEEN VAL SENALES & VENT

UP TO 5+ DAYS

END MARCH/MID APRIL

A guided hut to hut ski traverse from Val Senales to Vent, across the high peaks of the Ötztal Alps, between Italy and Austria, in the footsteps of Ötzi, the Ice Man.

Your journey starts in Bolzano, a lively alpine town where Italian style meets mountain culture. Before heading into the high mountains, you can visit the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology to meet Ötzi the Iceman. It is a simple but powerful idea, first you meet Ötzi, then you go ski across his land! :D

We spend the first night in the center of Bolzano with a relaxed briefing and a nice dinner mixing Italian and South Tyrolean food, an easy and enjoyable start before the real adventure begins.

Only one hour away is Val Senales, where we put on skis and start our traverse into the Ötztal Alps across the border with Austria. From the very first day, you leave the valley behind and enter a big, wild alpine world made of glaciers, high peaks and silence!

This is a real haute route for skiers with good experience. The terrain is glaciated, the environment is remote, and the days can be long. It is not extreme, but it is a proper mountain journey, more wild and committing than easier traverses.

We move hut to hut through this remote landscape, reaching the quiet tyrolian village of Vent, where we enjoy a comfortable night in a hotel before heading back into the mountains!

After Vent, if conditions allow, we aim to climb the iconic Similaun, one of the true highlights of the traverse and a beautiful ski mountaineering peak!

On the final days, we return towards Italy, passing through Finailspitze, near the exact area where Ötzi was discovered! It is a special moment of the journey, skiing through a place where history and high mountains come together!

If you are looking for something easier as a first experience, the Silvretta Ski Traverse is a great option (and can be personalized with some technical ascents like Piz Buin, etc…). This Ötztal route is more wild, more remote adventure!

At the end of each day, the huts of the Ötztal are known for their comfort, warm atmosphere and generous cuisine, exactly what you need to recover and enjoy every step of the journey.

So, what are you waiting for, come meet the Iceman and ski across his land!!!
