What the Selvaggio Blu Is Really Like: Climbing, Sea Views and Nights Under the Stars
The Selvaggio Blu (or Wild Blue Trek) in Sardinia is often described as Italy's most spectacular trek. But beyond the rappels and exposed passages, what makes this adventure truly unforgettable are the simple moments: sharing dinner in a shepherd's hut, swimming in hidden coves, preparing meals together by the sea and spending nights under the stars. Here are some of the highlights from our latest Selvaggio Blu expedition.
Dinner in a Traditional Shepherd's Hut
Open the wooden gate of a remote shepherd's hut and you are welcomed by the Bertarelli family. There are no grand gestures or polished tourist experiences here. Their hospitality is quiet, genuine and deeply Sardinian. They simply share what they have, and somehow that feels like more than enough.
The night is spent on the veranda, sleeping under the stars with nothing more than a sleeping bag and a mat. Around you, the sounds of the farm become part of the experience: goats bleating in the darkness, bells ringing softly and the rhythm of life continuing as it has for generations. The goats are milked in the evening and again in the morning, ensuring fresh milk every day.
Many visitors associate Sardinia with pecorino cheese, but here in the mountains around Baunei, goat cheese is king. The steep and rocky terrain is ideal for goats, while sheep farming and the production of the famous pecorino are more common in the gentler areas of the island.
The story of the hut itself says a lot about local traditions. What stands here today was originally just a small shelter used by an old shepherd. Before taking care of it, the first member of the Bertarelli family did not go to the town hall to ask who legally owned the land. Instead, he went into the village and asked who had looked after the place before him. Only after receiving that person's blessing did he begin managing it. In Sardinia, respect and relationships often matter more than paperwork.
Dinner is a celebration of simple ingredients and centuries-old recipes. Almost everything served on the table is produced right here on the farm, with the only exceptions being the wine and the honey. Fresh goat ricotta, homemade malloreddus and, of course, the famous porceddu, Sardinia's traditional spit-roasted suckling pig, are among the highlights. And if you are particularly lucky, you might even have the chance to taste roasted goat, a true local delicacy rarely found outside the mountains.
To finish, there is a warm seadas, the iconic Sardinian dessert filled with cheese and topped with honey. Then it's time to roll out the sleeping bags, listen to the sounds of the animals settling down inside the enclosure and drift off under one of the most star-filled skies in the Mediterranean.
The Thrill of the Rappels
Some of the rappels on the Selvaggio Blu easily make my personal top ten list of all time. After years of climbing and guiding around the world, that is saying something.
Where else do you get the chance to descend 50 meters on a rope directly onto one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean? My advice is always the same: keep your swimsuit on underneath your hiking clothes, because after touching down at Cala Biriala, a refreshing swim is hard to resist.
And then there is the very first rappel of the route. A spectacular 55-meter descent into one of the most impressive sea caves you are ever likely to see, just a few dozen meters above the turquoise waters below. The setting is simply surreal. The adrenaline is real, and so are the photos.
These rope sections are one of the reasons why the Selvaggio Blu is unlike any other trek in Europe. They add a touch of vertical adventure to an already incredible journey, combining hiking, scrambling and rappelling with breathtaking views of the Gulf of Orosei.
People often ask whether previous rope experience is required. The answer is no. Knowing how to rappel independently is certainly a bonus, but it is absolutely not necessary. During a guided Selvaggio Blu, your IFMGA mountain guide manages all the technical aspects and lowers you safely down each descent. All you have to do is relax, hang on the rope and enjoy the ride.
And if you are curious to learn, the Selvaggio Blu is actually a wonderful place to make your first independent rappels. Many guests discover a passion for rope work and leave Sardinia with a new skill and a lot more confidence than they expected.
Hidden Beaches and Evenings by the Sea
The beaches along the Selvaggio Blu have all the colors of the Caribbean, but with even more character. Their beauty comes not only from the crystal-clear water, but from the dramatic limestone cliffs that rise above them and the wild landscape that surrounds them.
Take Cala Goloritzé, with its iconic limestone pinnacle towering above the small bay like a natural cathedral. Or Cala Mariolu, famous for its incredible shades of blue and the streaks of red, grey and black running through the surrounding cliffs. Cala Biriala, with its perfectly shaped cove and white pebbles, looks almost too beautiful to be real. Then there is Cala Mudaloru, hidden beneath a spectacular cave, and Porto Pedrosu, a narrow inlet that gently opens to the sea, offering one of the most magical entrances to the Mediterranean you can imagine.
Several of these beaches have been ranked among the most beautiful in the world, and it is easy to understand why.
What makes the Selvaggio Blu truly special, though, is not just reaching these places, but experiencing them differently. You earn them with every step of the trek. And while day visitors and boats disappear in the late afternoon, you are still there, enjoying the quiet atmosphere that returns to the coast.
These evenings are some of my favorite moments of the entire journey. A swim in the sea, an aperitivo with friends, dinner on the beach as the sun sets behind the cliffs and the sound of the waves becomes the soundtrack of the evening. Later, we climb a short distance to the nearby bivouac area, where another night under the stars awaits.
Experiencing these places in such an intimate way is a privilege, and one that comes with responsibility. Throughout the Selvaggio Blu, we do our best to leave no trace and treat these natural gems with the respect they deserve, so that future generations can enjoy them just as we do today.
Sleeping Under the Stars
One of the most memorable parts of the Selvaggio Blu has nothing to do with ropes or exposed trails. It happens at the end of the day, when the hiking is done, the sun begins to set and it is time to settle into camp for the night.
The bivouac areas along the route are managed by the Municipality of Baunei and reserved in advance by the guide leading the group. Some camps are located close to the sea, such as those above Cala Mariolu and Cala Biriala, while others are perched high on the headlands, where light pollution is almost non-existent and the night sky becomes truly spectacular. And of course, one special evening is spent at the shepherd's hut, adding yet another layer to the experience.
We provide the tents and sleeping mats, and everyone helps with the simple tasks of camp life. Pitching your tent, inflating your mat and packing everything away the next morning may seem like small things, but they become part of the rhythm of the journey. In a world filled with notifications, emails and social media, there is something surprisingly satisfying about focusing on these simple routines.
In many ways, it feels like a form of meditation. Life slows down. Conversations become longer. Phones stay in backpacks. And suddenly, the things that matter become wonderfully simple: sharing dinner with friends, watching the last light fade over the sea and listening to the sound of the wind and the waves.
Then comes the night. Far away from cities and artificial lights, the sky above the Gulf of Orosei explodes with stars. And in the morning, one of my favorite moments of the entire Selvaggio Blu awaits: opening the zipper of your tent and watching the first light of dawn illuminate the cliffs and the sea below. It's the kind of view that no hotel room in the world can offer.
Climbing Above the Mediterranean
The terrain of the Selvaggio Blu is as varied as it is spectacular. This is not a trail where you simply put one foot in front of the other. Every day brings a new kind of landscape and a new way of moving through it.
One moment you are weaving through Mediterranean shrubs, the next you are walking across smooth limestone slabs, loose gravel or the sharp white rocks that make this coastline so unique. In some places, ancient juniper trunks, placed by local shepherds generations ago, still help hikers overcome steeper sections. These ingenious natural ladders are part of what gives the route its character and its deep connection to the history of Baunei.
And then there are the climbing sections. Nothing extreme, but real climbing nonetheless. The moves are always easy and protected by fixed ropes, allowing everyone to progress safely while enjoying the thrill of moving through such an incredible environment.
These technical passages, together with the spectacular rappels, are what make the Selvaggio Blu widely regarded as the most challenging trek in Europe. But difficulty is only part of the story. What makes this route so special is the incredible variety. No two hours are ever the same.
You might find yourself scrambling above the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Orosei, climbing a rocky corner with the scent of juniper in the air, or crossing ancient shepherd paths carved into the mountains long before hiking trails existed. It is this constant mix of trekking, scrambling and easy climbing that transforms the Selvaggio Blu from a simple hike into a true adventure.
And don't worry if you have never climbed before. All technical sections are managed by an IFMGA mountain guide and protected with fixed ropes, allowing you to move confidently and safely while experiencing one of the most unique trekking routes in the world.
Why the Group Experience Makes the Difference
As a mountain guide, one of the most rewarding parts of the Selvaggio Blu has very little to do with ropes, fitness or technical skills. Helping people overcome physical challenges is certainly satisfying, but what I truly love is witnessing the real magic of the Selvaggio Blu.
There is something about this journey, the effort, the teamwork, the long days on the trail, the simple camps, the shared meals and even the difficult moments, that slowly brings people together. Day after day, strangers become teammates, and teammates often become friends.
I see people helping each other, sharing stories, laughing around dinner and celebrating small victories together. For once, conversations happen face to face instead of through phone screens. The pace of life slows down and genuine human connection takes its place.
That spirit is something I care deeply about. On our Selvaggio Blu adventures, everyone takes part. We cook together, help each other pitch tents, separate waste responsibly and lend a hand whenever someone needs support. If someone runs out of water, nobody asks whose responsibility it is. Everyone shares what they have. Small acts of kindness become completely natural.
And that, to me, is the real magic of the Selvaggio Blu.
I never want this adventure to become just about completing the route or collecting another achievement. The beauty of the experience lies in the effort, the cooperation and the sense of solidarity that naturally develops along the way. Those are the things people remember long after the blisters are gone.
By the end of the trek, nobody misses the comforts of a five-star hotel. What you gain out here is something no luxury resort in the world can provide.
Is the Selvaggio Blu Right for You?
The Selvaggio Blu is not for everyone. And that's exactly what makes it so special.
If the spirit described in these pages resonates with you, if you are an experienced hiker who enjoys spending long days outdoors, and if you are ready to walk between six and eight hours a day at a steady, unhurried pace, then this adventure might become one of the most memorable trips of your life.
You don't need climbing experience, but you should feel comfortable with heights and be prepared for some exposed terrain. More than anything, the Selvaggio Blu rewards resilience rather than speed. It's not a race, and it is certainly not about suffering for the sake of suffering. It is about embracing the journey, adapting to the rhythm of nature and sharing the experience with others.
In return, you will discover a rare combination of sea and mountains, adventure and relaxation, effort and simple pleasures. One moment you are scrambling above turquoise waters, the next you are swimming in a hidden cove or enjoying dinner under the stars with new friends.
If that sounds like your kind of adventure, the Selvaggio Blu may well become one of the greatest experiences of your life.
