VIA FERRATA SAFARI

Bolzano Via Ferrata Safari

TRENTINO - SOUTH TYROL

UP TO 4+ DAYS

AUTUMN - WINTER - SPRING

A hotel-based via ferrata adventure exploring the incredible variety of ferrata routes around Bolzano in South Tyrol and Trentino — perfect for autumn, winter and spring when the high Dolomites are covered in snow.

Base yourself in Bolzano, one of the most versatile starting points for a via ferrata adventure in South Tyrol, especially during autumn, winter and spring when the high Dolomites are often covered in snow. Thanks to its unique position between the Dolomites and the warmer valleys to the south, Bolzano gives access to an incredible variety of ferrata routes at lower elevations that remain climbable for much of the year.

Within a short drive you can reach several valleys with completely different landscapes and styles of climbing: the sunny slopes of Val Venosta, the limestone walls of the Adige Valley, the warmer rock of the Sarca Valley, and even the Lake Garda area, where spring often feels like early summer.

This flexibility makes Bolzano a perfect base camp for a hotel-based via ferrata safari, allowing you to follow the best weather and climb routes that match the season and your level.

If you’d like to see what a week of winter ferrata around Bolzano can look like, you can read the story of our recent six-day adventure in the Journal.

You will have a welcome briefing before dinner with your guide, for an equipment double-check and a specific illustration of the program for the upcoming via ferrata days!

Accommodation: Hotel in Bolzano or Appiano sulla strada del vino

  • We begin the adventure with the Via Ferrata Burrone Giovanelli, a spectacular canyon route near the village of Mezzocorona, about 40 minutes from Bolzano.

This ferrata is technically easy, making it the perfect introduction to the week. The route climbs through a narrow gorge carved by water over centuries, surrounded by high rock walls and beautiful waterfalls. The ascent starts immediately beside one of these cascades, climbing the first metal rungs just a few meters from the flowing water.

Although the technical difficulty is moderate, the environment is truly impressive and gives a great first taste of via ferrata climbing.

The route forms a scenic loop hike with around 700 meters of elevation gain (about 2300 ft), finishing on the forested slopes of Monte di Mezzocorona. From here we enjoy wide views over the vineyards of the Rotaliana valley before descending comfortably by cable car.

A perfect first day to get comfortable with the equipment, find your rhythm on the rock, and start the week surrounded by an unforgettable landscape.

    Accommodation: Hotel in Bolzano

  • After breakfast we’ll head just south of Bolzano into the Adige Valley, where several excellent via ferrata routes offer the perfect terrain for the next stage of the adventure.

Depending on the weather and how you feel on the day, we can choose from a number of different routes. A great introduction is the Via Ferrata Rio Secco, a beginner–intermediate canyon climb that offers beautiful rock and a dramatic setting. For something slightly more sustained, the Val del Rì via ferrata provides an exciting journey through a narrow gorge with waterfalls and suspension bridges.

If you feel ready for something more athletic, we might climb the historic Via Ferrata Marangoni, a classic route on steep limestone walls above the Adige Valley. Another excellent option is the Croce di Fai via ferrata, a beautiful intermediate route with panoramic views over the valley and the surrounding Paganella and Brenta mountains.

The choice of route allows us to adapt the day to the conditions and to your progression during the week, ensuring a rewarding and enjoyable climb whatever the season.

    Accommodation: Hotel in Bolzano

  • Today we may head towards the Merano region, where several spectacular via ferrata routes climb the wild mountains of the Texel Group, one of the most beautiful and unspoiled areas of South Tyrol.

Depending on the conditions and your level, we can choose between several fantastic options. For experienced climbers looking for a bigger challenge, the Via Ferrata Hoachwool in Val Venosta offers a long and demanding route on steep terrain with sustained sections and impressive exposure. The ferrata climbs directly opposite Juval Castle, home to one of Reinhold Messner’s Messner Mountain Museums, at the entrance of Val Senales, the valley where Ötzi the Iceman was discovered.

Another excellent option is the Via Ferrata Stuller Wasserfall near the village of Moso in Val Passiria, an intermediate to advanced route that climbs beside a spectacular waterfall in a dramatic alpine setting.

Alternatively, we may explore the beautiful Via Ferrata Ziel in Val Ziel, an enjoyable intermediate climb surrounded by wild nature. The route passes near a beautiful waterfall and finishes close to a welcoming mountain hut, a perfect place to stop for lunch before the descent.

All three routes take place in the breathtaking landscapes of the Texel Group Nature Park, where rugged peaks, deep valleys and pristine alpine environments create the perfect setting for a memorable day of via ferrata climbing.

    Accommodation: Hotel in Bolzano

  • To top it all off, we’ll take you to the Lake Garda region, home to some of the most scenic via ferratas in Italy. Climb high above the lake on the panoramic Cima Capi route, or follow the historic Smugglers’ Trail (Sentiero dei Contrabbandieri), carved into the cliffs by old-time traders and outlaws. Just a little further north in the Sarca Valley, there are even more options: the playful Rio Sallagoni ferrata leading to the Drena Castle, or — for the truly hardcore climbers — the steep and demanding Pisetta ferrata above Lake Toblino, one of the most challenging routes in the area!
